KPKT fully support PM’s statement & committed to provide more affordable housing for Malaysians

PUTRAJAYA (August 30, 2024) —

The Ministry of Housing and Local Government has reaffirmed its full support to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim call for more affordable housing and its commitment to providing affordable housing in Malaysia, in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent call for increased housing projects in urban areas.

“We are dedicated to achieving our goal of ‘Shelter for All.’ We strive to increase the availability of affordable housing, particularly for low-income groups in urban areas,” said Minister Nga Kor Ming.

“Our commitment extends to ensuring that these homes are not only affordable but also of high quality, comfortable and situated in well-connected locations,” he added.

The ministry allocates approximately RM1 billion annually for social housing initiatives.

For 2024, it has earmarked RM546 million for the People Housing Program (Program Perumahan Rakyat) and RM358 million for the People Friendly Homes (Rumah Mesra Rakyat) scheme.

In line with the Twelfth Malaysia Plan, the government is committed to delivering 500,000 affordable housing units to Malaysians of all races and religions.

This initiative is spearheaded by agencies such as SPNB and PR1MA, which are committed to constructing at least 5,000 units each on a yearly basis.

Meanwhile, according to a survey conducted by Khazanah Research Institution in 2023, which included 3,800 households from five People Housing Program locations, over 60% of respondents indicated that they are satisfied with the overall level of comfort at PPR.

“This is just the beginning. We are working to further rebrand the PPR program as PRR (Program Residensi Rakyat) and enhance the initiative to ensure it meets international standards, similar to social housing programs in Singapore and Japan,” he added.
